Gas Works Tunnel

The Gas Works plant was built in 1922, replacing the existing one that was built in 1886. It produced gas from coal to supply the local council.

It was decommissioned in 1971 with demolition taking place over the next few years. It was only later realised how severe the extent of the contaminated soil with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) really was. PAHs have been associated with strong incidents of lung, skin and bladder cancer in humans, stemming from occupational exposures.
