The Fire

In the early hours of Wednesday 23 September 2020, an arsonist forced entry into the Morley shisha restaurant and set it on fire. It was all caught on CCTV footage.

A number of items were set on fire before the offender fled, causing an estimated $150,000 damage. This was later estimated at $1.75 million damage.

Five weeks later, Arson Squad detectives charged a 30-year old Middle Swan man with criminal damage by fire, as well as burglary and commit.

The former 38-year-old owner was later charged with one count of fraud. In August 2022, he was also charged with causing criminal damage by fire. By the time he appeared in court for his initial appearance in the same month, which was adjourned to November 2022, he was involved in another Morley shisha bar and restaurant called Up In Smoke at Coventry Village in Morley.

The last that can be found on the charges is an article about the upcoming trial date, sometime in the middle of 2023.

As of early March 2024, the former restaurant, turned occasional squat for the local homeless, is about to become demolished.
