Salt was first harvested on Rottnest Island during the 1830s and would continue for over 100 years.
For most of this time, Aboriginal prison labour was used.
Due to the lack of available firewood, the Salt Works closed in 1903.
A new Salt Works facility was later constructed nearby and managed by Victory Salt Refinery Limited for a portion of this time. It appears that salt harvesting ceased in 1952.
