Australian electric car production planned

PERTH ● 6 May 1991

Australian-designed electric cars were expected to enter production within six months, with about 1000 vehicles already on order.

The compact vehicle, known as the Townmobile Electric Multi-Purpose Vehicle, was described as noiseless, pollution-free and powered entirely by electricity. NSW politicians were reportedly considering replacing state government petrol vehicles with electric cars, which could be recharged overnight using off-peak electricity.

The cars had bullet-shaped stainless-steel bodies designed not to rust or dent easily and an expected life of 30 years. Their electric motors were claimed to cost about 25 per cent less to operate than an equivalent petrol vehicle, with a full recharge costing about $36.

Sydney company Elroy Engineering designed and manufactured the vehicle and announced plans to produce 1000 cars, while seeking investors and people interested in joining the project.

BHP and Pacific Dunlop had already agreed to supply materials. The vehicles seated nine people, with a single-level floor designed to make access easier for small children, elderly passengers and people using wheelchairs.
