Community policing scheme formally established
PERTH ● 25 June 1991
WA's community policing program received a formal identity after operating for four years, with its constitution officially adopted at a meeting of the Community Policing Council.
Police Minister Graham Edwards launched the constitution after council members unanimously approved it. Police Commissioner Brian Bull said the document formally defined the structure of community policing in WA and would allow it to operate as an incorporated organisation.
Bull said concerns about funding and whether the scheme would be accepted by the public had largely been resolved. A survey found 90 per cent approval for community policing.
The program was also expected to expand, with police structure and the Community Policing Council eventually coming under the control of an assistant commissioner.
Edwards said community policing was moving in the right direction but warned the community had a role in maintaining law and order. He said neighbourhood watch programs and closer cooperation between residents and police were important to its success.
