Lakes Action Group frustrated over remand centre
MURDOCH ● 2 July 1991
The Lakes Action Group continued its campaign against the proposed juvenile remand centre at Murdoch, with members frustrated by delays in forming a promised community input group.
Deputy chairman and Melville councillor Peter McLernon said residents around Bibra Lake and North Lake remained dissatisfied with the proposed centre and had been waiting for the government to establish the community group.
Community Services Minister Eric Ripper had encouraged the group to form another committee, but McLernon said nothing had happened since a meeting with him on 5 June.
Independent MPs Pam Buchanan and Ian Alexander were also expected to receive preliminary earthworks information before construction began in July, although McLernon said the group had yet to receive anything.
The group wanted to hear from residents within the City of Cockburn who were concerned about the proposal. Bibra Lake residents were particularly worried about security, the effect on the surrounding area and the lack of consultation.
McLernon said the earliest possible construction date was June 1992 because the former Lakes House building was still in recess. He also questioned why a remand centre should be constructed on the site, particularly as the main building was intended as a castle for community services employees and not for the benefit of juveniles who would use it.
