Applecross Alchera Living
On 23 November 1975, the City of Melville Aged Persons Home Trust adopted a new direction and a new name called Alchera Living, coinciding with the official opening of Stage One of the Weeronga Village. From that point on, Alchera Living (Inc) operated as a not-for-profit organisation, focusing on providing affordable retirement-living options for people aged 55 and over.
Applecross Village was one of the communities developed under this model, offering one and two bedroom independent-living units with shared facilities and a strong sense of community. Many of the units were refurbished over the years and the village remained part of Alchera’s broader portfolio of retirement housing for several decades.
The decision to demolish and redevelop the site formed part of Alchera Living’s long-term strategy to modernise its ageing housing stock, increase capacity and create accommodation that meets contemporary expectations. Clearing the old village in October 2025 made way for a major new seniors’ development, a complete transformation of the site.
Despite its significance, detailed public information about the transition and redevelopment has been surprisingly difficult to trace.
