20 - Beeliar Park The Spectacles Bush

Beeliar Park The Spectacles Bush

Located in the Beeliar Regional Park, The Spectacles Wetland is bordered by Thomas, McLaughlin and Anketell Roads. It contains two lakes, Lake Eye and Small Eye, over a space of 360 hectares.

The Peel Settlement Scheme was established in the area during 1920, although little attracted settlers to the area as a result of the swamps and infertile sands.

Little has changed to the wetlands area since 1920 and despite a number of farms once located in the area, little remains today.

There are two heritage walking trails around The Spectacles Wetland. The Aboriginal Heritage Walk Trail is 4.4km long and the Banksia Walk Trail, which is a 3.2km loop.

A small carpark is located on McLaughlin Road, which tends to fill quickly during popular times. Parking on the side of the road in various areas around the swamp is the only other alternative.

No bicycles are allowed into the wetlands and dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Bring plenty of water if you go on a walking trail because there are no drinking facilities in the reserve.
