Calls for Replacement of Onslow Police Station Following Cyclone Damage

ONSLOW ● 12 October 2026

Calls have been made for the State Government to commit funding and establish a construction timeline for a new police station in Onslow, after the town's existing station was closed following damage caused by Cyclone Narelle earlier in 2026.

The police station, built in 1980, was subsequently deemed unsuitable for continued use, forcing officers to relocate into temporary facilities constructed from modified sea containers.

Nationals WA MLC Julie Freeman criticised the situation, stating that concerns about the ageing building had been raised by local residents and the Shire of Ashburton for several years before the cyclone.

WA Police confirmed that planning for a replacement station was continuing, with a potential site being considered within the McGrath Avenue emergency services precinct. Police maintained that the temporary relocation had caused minimal disruption to daily operations and service delivery.

Police Minister Reece Whitby confirmed that the State Government was assessing options for a new facility to accommodate Onslow's growing needs, although no funding commitment or construction timeline was announced.

The situation has also raised concerns about the condition of police infrastructure in regional Western Australia, particularly in communities exposed to cyclones, flooding and other natural disasters where emergency services must remain operational during severe weather events.
