Claremont Museum Announces Exhibition Exploring the History Behind Local Street Names

CLAREMONT ● 08 October 2026

Claremont Museum is preparing to open a new exhibition examining the history behind the street names of one of Perth's oldest suburbs.

The exhibition, titled Streets of Claremont, will draw on the Town of Claremont's historical archives to explain how local streets received their names and the people, events and geographical features associated with them.

Among the examples featured are St Quentin Avenue, named in connection with an Australian military victory during the First World War, and Bay View Terrace, whose name reflects the views towards the Swan River.

The exhibition will also examine streets named after former mayors, councillors and members of the Claremont Roads Board, including individuals involved in introducing early services such as bore water supplies and electric lighting.

Claremont developed during the nineteenth century, occupying a position between Perth and Fremantle as settlement expanded along the Swan River.

Many of the suburb's street names reflect its early development, local government history and connections to significant events in Australian history.

Historian Sue Hobson will present a special talk exploring the origins of local street names and similarities between Claremont and neighbouring suburbs.

The exhibition is scheduled to open on Thursday, 29 October 2026, with a morning tea from 10am to 11am.

It will remain on display at Claremont Museum for several months, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about the suburb's history through its streets and the people associated with them.

Free tickets for the opening event are available through an online booking service.
