First Joey Scout group launched in Applecross

APPLECROSS ● 2 July 1991

The first Joey Scout group was launched in Applecross, giving children aged six to eight an introduction to scouting before progressing to Cubs.

The group was launched at Waylen Bay, with about 40 children attending and taking part in activities including a python and a Joey kangaroo for the children to see and touch.

Local group leader David Barton said the response was encouraging and another group could be established if more leaders were found.

Leaders Edda Irvine and Teresa May had developed a program of crafts, excursions and bush familiarisation for the children.

Children could spend two years in Joeys before progressing through Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers.

The Joeys met on Monday afternoons at the Waylen Bay Sea Scout Hall on The Strand, Applecross.
