Funding boost for Aboriginal driver training program
PERTH ● 2 July 1991
Clontarf's Aboriginal driver training program received additional funding from Catholic Community Care to continue helping young Aboriginal people obtain their driver's licences.
Program co-ordinator Sharmaine Slater said the project had been operating for three years, with its main aim to reduce the high percentage of Aboriginal people imprisoned for traffic offences.
Slater said many young drivers aged 16 and 17 had been disqualified from driving for life. The program provided practical driving instruction and helped participants work through the process of applying for a licence.
Resources were limited, with Slater the program's only qualified instructor and just two cars available for training.
Robert Isaacs presented Slater with the funding cheque on behalf of Catholic Community Care to provide ongoing support for the program.
