Nedlands Billy Cart Race Returns After Three-Year Break

NEDLANDS ● 15 October 2026

A community billy cart racing event organised by local fathers' group NedsLads is set to return to Nedlands Primary School on 22 November 2026, following a three-year break.

The event will bring together families to build and race homemade billy carts across two courses, with prizes awarded for both speed and cart design.

One course will take participants down the hill along Viewway, while a second gymkhana-style track will feature a series of bends and turns through the school grounds.

NedsLads is a local non-profit group affiliated with The Fathering Project, a national organisation that encourages fathers and father figures to become more involved in their children's lives and education.

Event organiser Ben Lane said the billy cart race provided an opportunity for fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and other family members to spend time with their children while working together on a practical project.

Families are encouraged to design and construct their own carts, with the preparation and building process considered an important part of the event.

For those without access to tools or building experience, NedsLads organises workshops where more experienced parents can assist others with constructing their carts.

The first Nedlands billy cart race was held around 2019, followed by a second event in 2023 that attracted more than 50 families.

Lane said there had been considerable interest in bringing the event back, with local families regularly asking when another race would be organised.

The 2026 event is supported by several local businesses, including Woolworths, Duet Real Estate, Carrington's Traffic Management and Accelerate Swim School.

Tickets cost $50 for one adult and one child, with additional children charged $10 each. Money raised will go towards future school community activities.

The event is scheduled for 22 November 2026 at Nedlands Primary School, continuing a community initiative aimed at encouraging family participation and strengthening connections between local parents and children.
