Seasonal Shark Barrier Returns to Quinns Beach Following Fatal Sorrento Attack
QUINNS BEACH ● 15 October 2026
The seasonal shark barrier at Quinns Beach in Quinns Rocks is being reinstalled ahead of summer, providing additional reassurance for swimmers and local families following the fatal shark attack at Sorrento Beach in September 2026.
Contractors were observed installing the barrier on Tuesday, 13 October, as preparations continued for the approaching summer swimming season.
The barrier forms part of the seasonal beach safety arrangements at Quinns Beach, which is regularly used by local residents and members of the Quinns Mindarie Surf Life Saving Club.
Experienced lifesaver Mike Spiby, the club's surf and ski coach, welcomed the installation and said it would help restore confidence among families with children learning to swim in the ocean.
Spiby has been involved in surf lifesaving since 1984 and previously volunteered at Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club in Victoria.
He said the Quinns Mindarie club had approximately 700 children participating in its Nippers program, with the barrier providing reassurance for parents and young swimmers.
The installation followed increased public concern about shark safety after the death of 63-year-old Greg O'Neill at Sorrento Beach the previous month.
Spiby said fatal incidents affected not only the families and surf lifesaving clubs directly involved but also the coastal communities and emergency responders across Western Australia.
He noted that swimming and other ocean activities were an important part of life for many Western Australians, particularly those living in Perth's coastal suburbs.
Local resident Chloe Venning also welcomed the barrier, describing it as an additional safety measure that could help people feel more comfortable entering the ocean.
She acknowledged that sharks were part of the natural marine environment but believed barriers could provide a way for swimmers and marine life to share coastal waters with reduced risk.
Quinns Rocks resident Kris Hennings, who was watching the installation, said he regularly brought his children to the beach and appreciated both the shark barrier and the presence of surf lifesavers.
Other local families said they preferred swimming at Quinns Beach during the months when the seasonal enclosure was installed.
The return of the barrier came as the City of Joondalup separately considered renewed investigations into shark protection measures at Sorrento Beach, where an earlier enclosure had been removed in 2020 following structural failures.
Unlike Sorrento, Quinns Beach continued to use a seasonal barrier, with its installation providing a designated swimming area during the warmer months.
The barrier was being installed as of 15 October 2026, ahead of the 2026–27 summer season.
