Security Review Announced for WA Police Academy in Joondalup

JOONDALUP ● 08 October 2026

Western Australia Police Commissioner Col Blanch has announced a security review of the WA Police Academy in Joondalup following concerns raised by the WA Police Union about public access to the training facility.

The academy forms part of the Joondalup Learning Precinct and was developed as an open-plan campus without a perimeter security fence.

The WA Police Union has called for improved security arrangements, including the installation of fencing around the academy grounds, after surveying staff about their concerns.

Almost 75 per cent of staff surveyed expressed concerns about the level of public access to the campus.

Approximately one-quarter of respondents reported having personally experienced or witnessed threats or intimidation involving members of the public.

One academy staff member described the facility as particularly insecure and claimed staff regularly received notifications about increased security threats.

Commissioner Blanch welcomed the union's concerns and confirmed that a review would be undertaken as soon as possible to assess the academy's existing security arrangements.

He acknowledged that security risks affecting police facilities and other government institutions had become increasingly important over time.

The WA Police Union welcomed the announcement and indicated that its representatives would assist WA Police and the State Government throughout the review.

The union maintained that the safety of officers and staff working or undertaking training at the academy needed to be a priority.

WA Police confirmed that security reviews of its facilities were conducted periodically and that measures could be updated or improved where necessary.

However, police declined to provide details about the scope or timetable of the review, citing operational and security considerations.

They also indicated that information about proposed or implemented security measures, including the outcome of the review, would not necessarily be made public.

As of October 2026, no decision had been announced regarding the installation of a perimeter fence or other physical security improvements at the academy.
