Mount Hawthorn 392 Oxford Street

The building at 392 Oxford Street, Mount Hawthorn was originally constructed as the Mount Hawthorn Library, which officially opened in May 1965 under the then Perth City Council.

The library opened during a time when Mount Hawthorn was rapidly evolving. New infrastructure and community facilities were appearing throughout the suburb, including a new post office, community centre, scout hall and shopping developments. The library became another important public facility serving local residents.

By this time, Oxford Street had already become one of Mount Hawthorn's main commercial strips. What had once developed alongside Perth's tram network had gradually evolved into a busy shopping, dining and business precinct serving the surrounding residential areas.

The suburb itself has a much longer history. Mount Hawthorn was first earmarked for urban development in the late nineteenth century, with land subdivisions occurring from the early 1900s.

More recently, 392 Oxford Street has become part of redevelopment plans encompassing 384-392 Oxford Street. In 2023, approval was granted for a seven-storey mixed-use development incorporating 36 apartments, office space, hospitality venues and underground parking.
