Services include telephone counselling, community treatment, medical support, withdrawal care, residential rehabilitation, family assistance, youth programs, Aboriginal-led services, peer-support groups and overdose prevention.

 

Some services are free, while others may have eligibility requirements, referral processes or fees. Contact the service before attending to confirm its current hours and availability.

 

Emergency and immediate support

• is unconscious or cannot be woken

• is having trouble breathing

• is having a seizure

• has collapsed

• is severely confused or distressed

• may have overdosed

• is at immediate risk of harming themselves or another person

 

The Alcohol and Drug Support Line is not an emergency service.

 

Do not suddenly stop using alcohol, benzodiazepines, GHB or other substances if you may be physically dependent. Withdrawal from some substances can be dangerous and should be discussed with a doctor or alcohol and drug service first.

Community Alcohol and Drug Services

Community Alcohol and Drug Services, generally known as CADS, provide free and confidential treatment for people aged 12 and over.

 

People can usually contact a service themselves without first obtaining a referral from a doctor.

 

Available support includes:

• opioid and alcohol pharmacotherapy

• support for families and significant others

Cyrenian House is a Western Australian not-for-profit alcohol and other drug treatment organisation established in 1981. It was founded following the death of Julie Hammersley from alcohol and other drug use in 1980. Her father, Richard Hammersley, became closely involved in establishing the organisation and developing its residential treatment service.

 

Services now include:

The Rick Hammersley Centre has operated since 1981 and provides longer-term residential treatment in a therapeutic community north of Perth.

 

The site also operates the Saranna Women and Children’s Program, which allows eligible women to live with their young dependent children while taking part in treatment.

 

Cyrenian House also operates the Serenity Withdrawal Unit and the Midland Withdrawal and Intervention Centre for people requiring low-medical withdrawal support. Admission arrangements and eligibility should be discussed with Cyrenian House.

Palmerston was established in 1980 and has developed into one of Western Australia’s major not-for-profit alcohol and other drug service providers.

 

It offers individual and family counselling, group programs, peer support, residential rehabilitation, transitional support and Community Alcohol and Drug Services across southern metropolitan Perth.

 

People do not need to be using alcohol or drugs themselves to seek assistance. Counselling is also available to partners, parents, relatives and friends affected by another person’s substance use.

Palmerston operates residential therapeutic communities and continuing-care services. Residential admission generally requires an assessment through its Perth office or another Palmerston service.

Holyoake was founded in 1975 by John Keating and Anita Day. Its first Perth centre opened in 1976, followed by what it describes as Western Australia’s first non-residential alcohol and drug treatment programs in 1978. Its head office moved to Victoria Park in 2005.

 

Holyoake provides:

East Perth Outpatient Service

Next Step is a government specialist alcohol and drug treatment service operated by the East Metropolitan Health Service.

 

Its East Perth outpatient service provides free and confidential:

• outpatient withdrawal

• police and court diversion programs

 

People can contact the service themselves or be referred by another health or community service.

 

Inpatient Withdrawal Unit

Next Step operates a 17-bed inpatient withdrawal unit with nursing care available 24 hours a day.

 

Admissions are planned rather than immediate, and a referral and assessment are required. Stays generally last about seven days, depending on the person’s needs and the substance involved.

 

Drug and Alcohol Youth Service

The Drug and Alcohol Youth Service, generally known as DAYS, provides free and confidential treatment for young people experiencing alcohol or other drug problems.

 

Services include:

• assessment and counselling

• medical and psychological support

• Aboriginal mentoring

• outreach

• pharmacotherapy

• education and group programs

• housing and transition support

• a two-week withdrawal and respite program

• a three-month residential rehabilitation program

 

The residential rehabilitation program may charge rent.

 

DAYS is operated through a partnership between Mission Australia and Next Step Drug and Alcohol Services. Young people can contact the service themselves or be referred by family, schools, health workers or other organisations.

SHIFT Youth Alcohol and Drug Outreach

SHIFT is a voluntary outreach service operated by Mission Australia for young people who need alcohol and other drug counselling and practical support but may have difficulty attending a fixed centre.

 

Young people can refer themselves or be referred by another person or service.

Wungening is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation providing free, culturally secure support to Aboriginal people across the Perth metropolitan area.

 

Its Ngalla Wirrin Wungening alcohol and other drug program provides individual counselling, family support, group programs and Aboriginal-led healing services. People can contact the service themselves, attend the East Perth hub or be referred by another organisation.

 

The organisation was previously known as Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug Services. Its present name, Wungening, reflects its growth into housing, justice, family, youth and community services while retaining its origins in Aboriginal-led alcohol and drug support.

Luma, formerly known as Women’s Health and Family Services, is a not-for-profit women’s health organisation that has operated in Western Australia for more than 45 years.

 

Its alcohol and other drug program supports women concerned about their own substance use, recovery or relapse, as well as women affected by another person’s alcohol or drug use.

The Women and Newborn Drug and Alcohol Service, known as WANDAS, supports pregnant women experiencing alcohol or drug problems.

 

Its specialist team includes doctors, midwives, social workers, dietitians and mental health professionals. The service can assist women to reduce or stop their use safely, consider treatment options and manage the health of both mother and baby during pregnancy.

 

Women can contact WANDAS themselves or be referred by a doctor, hospital or alcohol and drug service.

 

Salvation Army Alcohol and Drug Services

 

Harry Hunter Rehabilitation Centre

The Harry Hunter Rehabilitation Centre provides a 13-week residential alcohol and other drug treatment program for adults of all genders.

 

The Centre accommodates approximately 40 people in single rooms with private bathrooms. Treatment includes case management, group education, recovery planning and assistance with preparing for life after residential treatment. A longer stay may be approved in some circumstances.

 

The Salvation Army has operated welfare and residential services at the Gosnells property for decades. Part of the site was previously occupied by the Seaforth Boys and Girls Homes between the 1920s and 1950s.

 

Bridge House, Highgate

Bridge House operates several alcohol and drug services in Highgate, including:

• a sobering-up service providing a supervised bed for up to 12 hours

• a seven-bed low-medical withdrawal service, with stays generally lasting seven to 14 days

Fresh Start is a Western Australian not-for-profit addiction treatment organisation founded by Dr George O’Neil.

 

Its Subiaco clinic was established in 1997 and developed into a larger treatment program offering:

• continuing recovery support
