They remained there until February 1898. In August 1896, the partners established a new laboratory at Highgate Hill under the control of James Dowling Milson, after previously working from a smaller Murray Street lab. Much of their trade came from supplying the booming goldfields and business was described as brisk. The partnership between Danker and Milson was formally dissolved on 9 March 1898. Grew the store over the 240 metre floor space. The Stockade became a landmark in its own right, known for its wide range of hats, leather goods and Australian-style clothing. Gardner even produced a souvenir magazine called The Stockade Aussie Legends. For a while, Gardner sold online from Claremont before eventually ceasing operations.

Registered as a company in every state, with the earliest registration dated 20 October 1961 in Victoria and the latest de-registration dated 11 November 1994. Although a company registration for Western Australia is difficult to find, it was de-registered here on 27 September 1988.

Top Hatters – First registered as a business name on 16 October 1989 by James Gardner, the store later merged with The Stockade in October 2006. Gardner expanded the combined business, trading in hats, leather goods and Australian-style clothing. After the shopfront closed, he continued selling online from Claremont for a time before operations were eventually wound up. The business name was formally cancelled on 5 July 2018.

Trouchet’s Chemist (1914–) – 151 Barrack Street/395-7 Wellington Street. One of the best-remembered tenants of the building was Alexander Trouchet, a Perth-born pharmacist of French descent. Trouchet built up a strong local reputation for his remedies, the best known being Vimos Tonic. Marketed as a cure-all, Vimos claimed to treat everything from digestive troubles to “nervous conditions.” Like many patent medicines of the time, its success rested more on bold advertising than proven science but it became a well-known name in Perth. Trouchet operated his chemist shop here for many years and after his death the business passed to other hands.

Among those to follow was Miss H. M. Lonergan, one of Western Australia’s first female chemists who worked at Trouchet's. At a time when women were rarely admitted to the profession, she made history in 1915 by winning a gold medal in her final examinations. Lonergan’s career was a milestone for women in pharmacy, helping to pave the way for greater participation in the years that followed.
