Rocky Bay Foreshore

Page in progress as of 7 November 2026

The Rocky Bay Foreshore project is currently being researched and compiled as part of the River Studies. The project will document the history, industrial activity, geology, environmental conditions and physical changes along the foreshore, incorporating historical records and photographs taken on seven separate occasions between October 2022 and November 2026.

The project will consist of the following sections, which may be published across several individual pages:

History of Rocky Bay: Early history, naming, settlement, historical descriptions, land use, recreation and development.

Industry at Rocky Bay: Former industrial operations, including soap manufacturing, Vacuum Oil activities, associated infrastructure and surviving industrial remains.

Limestone quarrying: Historical quarrying operations, extraction methods, quarry locations and surviving evidence of limestone removal.

Changes to the foreshore: Historical shoreline positions, possible dredging, excavation, reclamation, changes in ground levels, erosion and other physical alterations.

Flora and fauna: Native and introduced vegetation, wildlife, marine organisms, intertidal habitats and environmental conditions along the foreshore.

Limestone geology and surface conditions: Geological formations, limestone colouration and staining, mineral deposits, biological growth, vegetation growing within the limestone, weathering, cavities, erosion and surface textures.

Foreshore photographic survey (2022–2026): A continuous photographic sequence documenting the length of the foreshore, compiled from photographs taken during multiple visits.

Dated photographic records (2022–2026): Seven individual photographic surveys presented chronologically, documenting the condition of the foreshore and any identifiable changes between visits.

Limestone fractures and cliff stability: Photographic documentation of cracks, joints, fractures, gaps, detached limestone and fallen material. Where possible, the earliest and most recent photographs of individual features will be compared, with fractures outlined to assist identification.

The project will be updated progressively as historical research, photographic comparisons and environmental observations are completed. Where the available evidence is insufficient to establish the cause or extent of a particular feature or change, this will be identified rather than presented as a confirmed finding.
