Maylands Commercial Centre
The Maylands Commercial Centre is set to become one of the largest redevelopments undertaken in central Maylands, transforming a prominent section of Guildford Road between Seventh and Eighth avenues.
Maylands has a long history of commercial, residential and industrial development dating back to the late nineteenth century. Much of its early growth was driven by transport and industry, particularly the establishment of the Mephan Ferguson foundry and the opening of Maylands railway station in 1900.
As the surrounding population increased, Guildford Road developed into the suburb’s main shopping and business strip. Numerous shops and services were established near the railway station, helping to form the town centre that remains in the area today.
The Maylands Commercial Centre site has undergone several changes over the years and has now been identified for a major mixed-use redevelopment by Greenpool Capital. Plans have included new shops, hospitality businesses, apartments, medical and wellness services, childcare facilities and extensive underground parking.
The project would create a large new residential and commercial development within the existing Maylands town centre. It has also generated discussion about the scale of future development and the retention of the suburb’s established streetscape and character.

Midland Parade Shops
In the early hours of 25 October 2024, a deliberately lit fire severely damaged several businesses along Midland Parade near Tuohy Lane, causing an estimated $500,000 worth of damage.
Emergency services were called at about 2.30am after a stolen white Nissan Navara was driven through the front of A-Deal Tobacconist and the building was set alight. CCTV footage showed the vehicle entering the car park outside Dan Murphy’s Midland, circling the area and crashing into the shopfront before a man was seen leaving the vehicle and fleeing. Police later confirmed that the Navara had been stolen from a property in Aveley on 8 October.
Investigators stated that the tobacconist had not been involved in any criminal activity, although possible links to the tobacco-related arson attacks affecting businesses in eastern Australia were also examined. Arson Squad detectives continued their investigation and appealed for public assistance, with a reward of up to $25,000 offered for information leading to the identification and conviction of those responsible.
