Albany GGS School

Albany Great Southern Grammar School first opened its doors in 1999 in temporary, rented buildings at Mount Melville. This site was always intended as a short-term solution and within about a year, the school relocated to its purpose-built campus at Lower Kalgan, where it remains today.

Once the move was complete, the former Albany Highway site was left vacant and later came under the control of the Albany Aboriginal Corporation. However, the presence of asbestos throughout the buildings made reuse difficult. With remediation costs high and redevelopment funding hard to secure, the site remained unused for many years.
