Lascaux IV Prehistoric Cave

On 12 September 1940, 18 year old Marcel Ravidat was walking his dog Robot, when Robot suddenly disappeared down a hole left by a fallen tree. The truth was said to be embellished by Marcel and that in fact, Robot only stopped at the hole. Marcel dropped a few rocks down it, which either sounded very deep or somewhat endless. He returned four days later with three friends, thinking that this hole could lead to the legendary myth of an underground passage that went to the Lascaux Manor.

The four boys entered a shaft to find one of the most important historic finds, with more than 6,000 cave drawings from generations expanding over as long as 17,000 years ago!

There are no less than 35 caves and shelters in the Dordogne area, filled with paintings like these.
