Sergeants' Mess

Officers' Mess

Landgate Map Previewer - Bickley Battery Officers' Mess

The building that once served as the Officers’ Mess appears to have been a substantial two-storey structure. It was enclosed by a perimeter fence along the northern side and to the rear, likely to provide privacy and separation from the surrounding military activity.

At the front right corner of the property stood a small rectangular building facing north. This structure appears to have had an open gable-style roof, likely clad in corrugated iron. Based on its form and location, it may have functioned as a toilet block. Its size suggests it was more substantial than a typical rural outhouse, indicating use by multiple occupants rather than as a simple auxiliary facility.

Between this smaller structure and the main Officers’ Mess was an evenly spaced open area. In historical photographs, this space appears to have been grassed or covered with low vegetation. While the black-and-white imagery limits certainty, the lack of structures suggests an open yard or maintained ground rather than a hard surface.

The main building itself also appears to have featured an open gable-style roof. Along the western front, the roofline extended to form a narrow patio or shaded strip, providing some protection from the sun and weather at the front of the building.

In plan, the Officers’ Mess appears to have been roughly square. Based on visual scaling from available imagery, the footprint is estimated to have been approximately 7x7 metres, although this remains an approximation rather than a measured figure.

At the eastern end of the building, a small rectangular structure was attached to the rear. This may also have served as a toilet or service area, raising the possibility that the smaller detached building at the front fulfilled a different function, or that facilities were altered over time.

Behind the building was a small backyard area, extending only a few metres before the perimeter fence enclosed the property.

Today, the Officers’ Mess is another example of a building that has been lost to time, with no surviving structure remaining on site.
