A big thankyou to our Major Sponsor of the Rottnest Project!

Sadly here in Perth, history feels like a complete joke.

People say they care about history, probably in the same way they like sitting on their arse watching TV.

So many buildings are demolished or changed beyond their original appearance without being fully photographed and documented. Yet no one seems to care until it's gone... then they start whinging.

In most cases when you try and ask permission for access, very few people say yes. Most don't even bother responding to emails.

For a time, we did contemplate contacting and networking with history organisations but rarely do they bother to respond and almost everyone of them seem to have their own agenda, particularly when they're funded by some self-interest group. Though, it's pretty hard to know exactly what they do, that contributes to history. Even when they're told about a place they have responsibility for is at risk of being trashed, they say they care but don't act until its too late.

Government buildings tend to be impossible to gain permission for, even places that have been closed for more than 10 years. I recently thought the Department of Housing was one of the most secretive agencies in Australia when it comes to history and information but someone enlightened me that it was most likely because the government don’t place an importance on documenting the poorer classes of society.

Trespassing is the only method of entry at times and it's a case of being the only way a place is going to get documented. A lot of people are quick to discuss the contentious legalities but most of them will appreciate the end product - the photos.

Unfortunately some people, including those with monetised YouTube channels, occasionally use force to enter, in a desperate bid to be the first person inside. Instantly posting it on their gay ass channels, places are trashed quicker than ever instead of holding it off until the building is gone! Especially from big groups of kids who go there for their own selfish entertainment, trashing places, spraying trashy crap on the walls and ruining it for everyone else... making it harder to document places.

But it's just history, right? Once it's gone... it's gone.
